Why Play Matters in Early Learning

Play can help young children explore ideas, language, movement and relationships.

Play gives young children a chance to try ideas, notice patterns, use language and practise taking turns. Everyday materials such as blocks, cups, paper and safe household objects can prompt observation and problem-solving.

Ways to support meaningful play

  • Offer safe, age-appropriate materials and enough time to explore.
  • Ask open questions such as “What do you notice?” or “What could we try next?”
  • Make room for drawing, music, movement, pretend play and outdoor observation.
  • Let children attempt manageable tasks rather than doing everything for them.

Play should be suited to a child’s age and abilities, with adult supervision and safe materials. These are general parent ideas, not a replacement for individual educational or developmental advice.
