Encouraging Independent Learning

Small daily opportunities can help children build confidence, responsibility and curiosity.

Independence develops gradually. Children benefit when adults offer clear routines, age-appropriate choices and enough time to attempt a task before stepping in to help.

Ideas for home

  • Give two suitable choices, such as which book to read first.
  • Invite a child to pack a bag using a simple checklist.
  • Ask what they tried when a task felt difficult.
  • Praise persistence, care and thoughtful questions as well as finished work.

Support should fit the child’s age, needs and family circumstances. Keep expectations encouraging, and speak with the school if you would like to discuss a particular learning concern.
